When most of us hear the word “butter”, we almost automatically think “bad”. But are we wrong?
What is Butter?
Butter is essentially the fat portion of cow’s (or another mammal’s) milk.
It is made up of mostly saturated fats but contains other fats as well.
Potential Health Benefits
Contains different nutrients, including vitamins A & E which function to promote skin health, immune response, and act as an antioxidant.
Has a high “smoke point”, or a temperature at which it can be cooked before it starts to break down and create harmful chemicals.
Potential Health Risks
High in saturated fats which may be linked to heart disease if consumed in high amounts.
High in calories which may lead to weight gain if over-consumed.
Our Take:
We believe that butter may have some health and practical benefits when eaten properly. We believe that butter may be best used as a cooking agent to provide anti-stick properties and add mild flavor. We recommend, however, to limit or moderate the intake of butter for most other purposes (spreads, sauces, etc.).
Need a Better Butter?
We recommend consuming butter from grass-fed animals. That’s why we like brands such as Vital Farms, Organic Valley, and Horizon Organic.
