Is Wild-Caught Fish Healthier than Farmed?

Fish offers many known nutritional benefits, but these benefits may depend on whether it’s “wild-caught” or “farm-raised”.

Definitions:

“Wild-Caught” (WC) fish are caught in their natural environments.

“Farm-Raised” (FR) fish are bred by humans in “fish farms” intended for human consumption.

Differences in Quality:

WC fish may contain more nutrients, healthy fats, less total fat, less toxins, and may have less of a negative impact on the environment.

FR fish may contain more total fat, more toxins such as antibiotics, pesticides, and other drugs, and may harm the environment.

Which fish should you eat?

WC fish tends to be more expensive than FR fish. However, if you can afford it, we always recommend choosing WC.

If price is an issue, FR fish may still offer nutritional benefit if eaten in moderation.

Our favorite?

We appreciate one of Dr. Andrew Weil’s favorite fishes, the Wild-Caught Alaskan Salmon!

Don’t have time to cook?

We recommend Wild Planet’s canned wild-caught tuna, salmon, and sardines!
